Lake of the Hanging Glaciers

The hike up to the Lake of the Hanging Glaciers takes you through lush forests, up steep switchbacks, past several awesome waterfalls and into alpine meadows with an abundance of several different species of wildflowers.

The lake is above tree line and you can hear the shrill whistle of the marmots. You can hike along the shore of the lake or onto the ridges on either side where there are several climbing opportunities.



This hike takes approximately 6 hours return, with a total hiking distance of 16 km.

  • Drive out through Wilmer onto Westside Rd until you reach a 4 way junction at 10 km.
  • Turn left onto Horsethief Creek Forestry Service Rd.
  • At the 13 km sign stay on the main road to the left marked as the route to the Lake of the Hanging Glaciers..
  • The Lake trailhead is located at the end of the road where Horsethief Creek has washed it away, at the 49 km.
